Senior Care in Abington PA
Even though spring is over, your loved one may still find that their allergy symptoms are lingering on. If there is a lot of pollen in the air where you live or if they are affected by indoor allergens such as dust mites and pet dander, it would not be uncommon for their symptoms to persist even as springtime ends. Allergy symptoms can be uncomfortable, irritating, and they can sometimes prevent your loved one from doing the things they enjoy such as taking walks outside. If their symptoms are severe and persistent, it can even affect their quality of life. For these reasons and more, it is important for caregivers to help their loved ones to manage their allergy symptoms so that they can go back to enjoying their normal, enjoyable activities. Here are just a few ways you can help:
Make a Doctor’s Appointment
If your loved one is having trouble managing their allergy symptoms, it may be time to talk to a doctor. Their doctor can recommend or prescribe medications that will be appropriate for them and let them know how to take them. With all of the allergy remedies available over the counter today, it can be difficult to choose which ones are right for your loved one, so it never hurts to get a doctor’s opinion. In addition, if your loved one takes other medications, it is important for them to avoid allergy medications that may react dangerously with their current medications.
Allergy-Proof the Home
For your loved one, avoiding all allergy triggers may be impossible especially if they live in an older home or have a beloved pet. However, there are ways to cut down on the amount of allergens in the air and in the home. Putting allergy covers on your loved one’s mattress and pillows is one great idea. Another is using HEPA air filters in the home and changing them frequently. Vacuuming once or twice a week is another way to keep allergens such as dust mites at bay. If your loved one has a pet, make sure to groom/bathe the pet frequently and don’t allow it to sleep in bed with your loved one.
Try Home Remedies
While medications can certainly be effective against allergy symptoms, they can sometimes come with side-effects. If your loved one prefers more natural remedies, rinsing out the sinuses with a net pot can be effective as can some essential oils.
